Is there going to be marriage in heaven?
Getting straight into the verse that is the point of conflict for believers:
“34 Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection. 37 But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.” 39 Some of the teachers of the law responded, “Well said, teacher!” 40 And no one dared to ask him any more questions.” -Luke 20:34-40
This scripture is talking about what happens when a man dies, his brother must take her and take care of her. In that time, if I’m not mistaken, if there were no children they were to have children but if they did have children they were to not have a sexual relationship but it would be a strictly caring one. He is to take care of her and provide for her. In that day they did not know what a spiritual marriage is, they married because of social status, power or gaining something. They did not know what a true spiritual marriage is. God made marriage here on earth, why would he stop that in heaven? Yes, marriage is not going to be the same. The goals are not going to be the same, but the Bible says that two will become one. Two souls are going to become one, they are going to have a spiritual binding. The scripture says: “When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.” After the resurrection there will not be any new marriage in the human sense but it does not talk about . Those who are married will continue to be married. “and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh.”
What about those who have been divorced? They will be like angels in heaven where they will not be married. What about those who divorce and want to re-marry? Jesus says there is very strict laws about who should divorce. The only reason for divorce is sexual immorality. Once they divorce they are to re-marry another person who is in the same situation or someone who has never married. That is the person who they are to be spiritually married.
We do not know what life is going to be like in heaven but Jesus does not say there will not be marriage in heaven as long as it is a spiritual marriage. God made marriage in the beginning and it will last until the end of time, Man being alone was the only thing God saw that was not good, I do not think he would change that in heaven.
“He who lays up treasures on earth spends his life backing away from his treasures. To him, death is loss. He who lays up treasures in heaven looks forward to eternity; he’s moving daily toward his treasures. To him, death is gain.” –Randy Alcorn
